| Corrie favourite Betty Driver dies |
[15 Oct 2011|12:58pm] |
Coronation Street favourite Betty Driver has died at the age of 91. An ITV spokesman said she "died peacefully in hospital" in the early hours of Saturday. She had played the role of Rovers Return barmaid Betty Williams (Turpin) in the soap for 42 years.

So so sad. I hope they give her a good send off in true Corrie style.

I am going to have trouble watching twice as much Corrie as I usually do... my time available to watch TV is limited. I may try to watch one ep a day and then watch 5 on Sunday.
However I am enjoying the storylines themselves.
Anyone know how the Sunday omnibus is going to work? Is it going to be 5 hours of Corrie? :O

What's happened to the Kebab Shop?
They haven't shown it in ages. Who's working there?
With Dev's financial crisis, did he sell it and I missed it?

Some days I don't trust the CBC.
Check out this article where the author claims to be a big fan of the show, yet says it's set in Weatherdale.
I've already sent them an email to point out the error of their ways.
I suspect I won't be the first or only one to do so.

| Meeting Vicky Binns |
[14 Apr 2011|08:07am] |
This year's Corrie event in Halifax has come and gone and it was another big success. The woman that played Molly Dobbs was the guest, Vicky Binns and she was really, really nice. Very bubbly and confident and really engaged the audience. I stayed over at the hotel and hung out with the committee members after in the committee room along with Vicky so got a chance to chat with her a tiny bit. I did a long blog post about it over here and if you're interested in reading about past visits by Corrie actors to Halifax, there are links on my own website

sorry if this is really late to the game, but anyone else notice the disappearance of the Visual Updates site? I guess Mike Plowman got let go or something, have they ended altogether? I think he did them just for fun when he started, he did an awesome job and his updates were hilarious.

| The Road to Coronation Street |
[17 Sep 2010|09:21am] |
|
Any fans out there that are in the UK or that practice the fine art of downloading... If you haven't heard about it, you really need to see The Road to Coronation Street, the story of how Tony Warren and Canadian Harry Elton got Coronation Street on the air in 1960. Daran Little wrote a flawless script and the casting was inspired! It's available on the BBC iPlayer for a week or so and apparently repeating on BBC4 on Saturday night. I blogged a bit about it over here with a few links to some reviews and things in there as well. I don't know if it will be shown outside of the UK but if any tv station worth it's salt that already carries Corrie has any smarts at all, they'll pick it up, (are you listening CBC???)

I'm watching the current Corrie stuff and it is July and people are wearing long sleeve shirts and jackets. Is this normal? Is it cold in Manchester in July? Also, it seems like the kids JUST got out of school and had a prom... is this normal? And can anyone explain why school stops at 16 in Britain and how all that works? Ha, I feel like I've been watching Corrie for long enough that I should know this stuff, but I don't.

| Fifteen minutes of fame |
[19 Jul 2010|08:18am] |
I'm going to have my 15 minutes of fame. Well, probably not 15 minutes, more like 2 minutes if i'm lucky. But it's fame, nonetheless! There's a documentary being made in Canada about Canadian Coronation Street fans? I was asked to participate in it along with a few other people i know in various locations in Canada. Yesterday was the big day. We scheduled a Corrie ping (get together of corrie fans, ours, the Downeast Streeters, is more like a fan club) to fit in with the film crew's schedule and they arrived and got set up. It was pretty good, too, though they had a microphone on me and one other guy all through it. That means be careful what you say! Oh, and please take it off while i nip to the loo! There are some things you don't need to hear! Here's Steve and Joe, two of the crew, at the ping. Mobile phone camera, no flash.

Those of us who were doing things for the ping, like the quiz or a chat about the show, sometimes had to redo it for the cameras, for a different angle or so they could catch it properly.
After the ping, the crew came to my apartment. What a palaver that was and it was utter chaos with equipment and cables everywhere! They move things around and "dress" the views behind the camera so it looks balanced, they had to arrange the lights and keep my curtains closed so the light would be more even i guess. There was a sound man, Joe, and a camera man, Steve, and the director, Eunice. I had to change my top a few times as i couldn't wear the same thing i had on at the ping and the interview was to be a different top than the one i was wearing when they filmed me on Graham's webcam since we were then going to shoot my side of that conversation. Everything had to match so some little old lady from the middle of nowhere wouldn't call up the CBC and complain. ;))
The interview itself was ok. I was a little nervous but not too much. I was more worried about prattling on a bit but if i did, or if i stumbled on words, they just restarted. The director sat right beside the camera so i was looking at her all the time, not into the camera and i had to try not to look around the room as i was speaking, too. We talked about how gramie_dee and i met and fell in love, which was one of the main focuses of my bit in the doc, i think. We also talked about the corrie scene in Halifax, and my involvement in it. She gave me some trivia to answer and got me to pose a question as well. Then we went to the webcam and went through the conversations we'd done a few weeks ago. They sent us a transcript to go by. That was repeated several times to get different angles and some with G. wearing his glasses and some without because they couldn't remember if he was wearing them when they filmed his side of the cam conversation.
It was a very warm day but for most of the time it wasn't too hot in my apartment. They did leave my fan on low as it was very quiet but by the end of the time they were there, it was getting pretty warm in there. I'd say they were there almost 3 hours by the time they packed up and reset my apartment. That's it for my part though she wants some photos as well so i'll have to dig out some old disks! Here's Steve, Eunice and Joe giving me the Horns Up as they were leaving!

The documentary is going to be called Corrie Crazy and will be on CBC in Canada on December 9, to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of Coronation Street.

| help please! |
[09 Jul 2010|05:00pm] |
I wrote off to a lot of celebrities and tv shows and such to get items for a fundraiser for an amateur dramatics group fundraiser in September, and, Corrie fans, I would deeply appreciate your assistance!
The producers of the TV soap opera Coronation Street, donated this top worn by the character Diedre Barlow to our fundraiser. It came this morning with a letter and certificate of authenticity. They said they would also pop in a photo of her in the costume, but forgot as there wasnt one in the envelope.
A quick google hunt hasnt revealed anything, and as someone who doesnt watch soaps, I am slight hamstrung. Do any of you who like Corrie, know of a pic of her in that top, that I can print off to go with the auction stuff? I would be soooo grateful.

| your first storyline |
[04 Jun 2010|01:54pm] |
What was the major storyline you remember from when you first began watching Coronation Street?
I began watching around the time Ashley was hanging out with Zoey and her baby and when Judy Mallett got a blood clot in her leg from an accident in Vera's son's wonky car and died. I'll never forget the scene with Judy hanging up laundry. Those poor twins!
